ABUJA, NIGERIA – The Association of Radiographers of Nigeria (ARN) has rejected a proposed health reform bill currently before the National Assembly, which they claim seeks to dissolve the profession and transfer its functions to other health workers.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the association warned that the bill, if passed, would endanger patient safety and undermine decades of specialized training and practice. The radiographers accused the sponsors of the legislation of attempting to “scrap” the profession without proper consultation.
“This bill is a direct threat to diagnostic healthcare in Nigeria. We will not stand by and watch our profession be dismantled,” a spokesperson for the association said.
The proposed legislation is part of a broader health reform package that has already drawn criticism from medical laboratory scientists, nurses, and other health professional groups.
The radiographers called on the National Assembly to suspend further action on the bill and engage in inclusive stakeholder consultations.
The House of Representatives Committee on Health has yet to respond to the rejection. Lawmakers have assured that all concerns will be considered as legislative processes continue.
