Retired Police Officers Stage Protest in Abuja Over Welfare Concerns

Retired officers of the Nigeria Police Force on Monday staged a protest in Abuja, demanding improved welfare and better pension conditions from the Federal Government.

The protesters, many of whom are elderly, gathered at strategic locations within the Federal Capital Territory, carrying placards and chanting slogans to draw attention to what they described as years of neglect and hardship after retirement.

According to the aggrieved retirees, their pensions under the contributory pension scheme have remained inadequate, making it difficult for them to meet basic living expenses.

They called on the government to urgently review the scheme and ensure that retired officers receive fair and sustainable benefits.

Some of the protesters also appealed for their removal from the contributory pension system, arguing that it has not adequately catered to their needs compared to previous pension structures.

Speaking during the protest, representatives of the group urged the government to prioritize the welfare of those who dedicated their lives to maintaining law and order across the country.

They stressed that improved welfare would not only benefit retirees but also boost morale among serving officers.

Security was maintained at the protest venue, with authorities monitoring the situation to ensure it remained peaceful.

The protest highlights growing concerns over pension reforms and the need for policies that adequately support retired public servants in Nigeria.
