Amid rising nationwide insecurity, stakeholders in Nigeria’s South-East region are calling for urgent and unified action from the area’s governors to safeguard their zone.
The calls follow swift security measures adopted by South-West governors, including establishing a security fund and a digital intelligence-sharing platform. In contrast, critics note the South-East Governors’ Forum lacks a functioning secretariat and decisive collective action.
Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Mike Ahamba, urged the governors to “trust themselves and be united,” emulating their South-West counterparts. “Christmas is coming; there are many parts of the South-East that people cannot visit,” he stated.
While Abia State Governor Alex Otti has convened state-level security meetings, broader regional coordination remains pending. Igbo leader Prince Richard Ozobu linked insecurity to governance failures, urging job creation and accountability.
