…25 Lawmakers Vote Unanimously as Constitutional Amendment Gathers Momentum
The Rivers State House of Assembly has endorsed the proposed constitutional amendment seeking to establish state police across Nigeria, joining Osun and Edo states in backing the bill.
CDA News Nigeria reports that all 25 members of the Assembly voted in favour of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, during plenary on Monday, September 28, 2026, following consultations with their constituents.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the Speaker, Martins Amaewhule, who presided over the session, said Nigerians have long clamoured for a policing system at the subnational level to complement the federal police.
“By this voting, the 10th Assembly is fully in support of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (Sixth Alteration) Bill 2026,” Amaewhule declared.
The Speaker said the bill contains 26 clauses, with 25 alterations involving substitutions to sections of the principal Act, including Sections 84(4), 89(2), 121(3), 124(4), 109(2), 153(1), 157(2), 158(1), and 160.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the National Assembly transmitted the State Police Bill to the 36 state Houses of Assembly on September 16, 2026, pursuant to Section 9 of the 1999 Constitution. At least 24 of the 36 state legislatures must approve the amendment before it can proceed to the President for assent.
Osun State became the first to endorse the bill on September 22, followed by Edo State on September 23. Rivers now becomes the third state to formally back the proposal.
