Sambo Welcomes Alison-Madueke’s Justice, Says FG and EFCC Owe Nigerians Explanation

Former Vice President Namadi Sambo has welcomed the outcome of former Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke’s case, stating it is good that she asserted her innocence and obtained justice.

However, Sambo demanded that the Federal Government and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) owe Nigerians a clear explanation of what transpired. He noted that the same case previously saw authorities announce the recovery of certain assets and valuables, and now the public needs clarification on what has changed.

“It is important for them to explain whether relevant facts were properly presented to the British authorities and why a different conclusion may have been reached,” Sambo said.

His comments follow Alison-Madueke’s recent legal victory in the United Kingdom, where she was cleared of corruption charges after years of prosecution. The former minister had consistently maintained her innocence throughout the proceedings.

The EFCC had previously secured court orders in Nigeria to freeze properties and assets linked to Alison-Madueke, claiming they were proceeds of corruption. The commission also announced recoveries of jewellery and cash valued at millions of dollars.

Sambo’s intervention adds to growing calls for transparency in anti-corruption prosecutions, particularly cases involving high-profile officials tried abroad. Critics have questioned whether Nigerian authorities provided adequate evidence to support foreign prosecutions.

The EFCC is yet to respond to Sambo’s demands for clarification.
