ABUJA, NIGERIA — Former Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has called on leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to immediately withdraw all pending court cases and work towards holding a fresh national convention to resolve the party’s protracted leadership crisis .
In a statement personally signed and issued in Abuja on Tuesday, Saraki appealed to the warring factions within the party to put aside personal interests and prioritize the unity and future of the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections .
Saraki’s intervention follows Monday’s Court of Appeal judgment which nullified the national convention held in Ibadan in November 2025 that produced the Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC) . The appellate court upheld a Federal High Court ruling which restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognizing the convention’s outcome, citing non-compliance with the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act .
“The recent Court of Appeal judgment, while a legal reality, should not be seen as a defeat for any individual or group within our party. Rather, it must serve as a wake-up call for all of us to rise above personal ambitions and work collectively to rebuild the PDP,” Saraki stated .
The former Kwara State governor emphasized that the PDP remains the strongest opposition party in Nigeria and cannot afford to continue in a state of perpetual crisis while the ruling APC prepares for the 2027 elections .
“We must look beyond the current leadership tussle and focus on the bigger picture: providing Nigerians with a credible alternative in 2027. This cannot happen if we are busy fighting ourselves in court while the APC consolidates its hold on power,” Saraki warned .
He specifically appealed to the Turaki-led faction to consider withdrawing its appeal at the Supreme Court, while urging the Nyesom Wike-led faction to extend a hand of fellowship to aggrieved members as preparations begin for a fresh convention .
“Let those who have indicated interest in going to the Supreme Court sheath their swords. Let those planning a fresh convention ensure it is inclusive, transparent, and leaves no room for further litigations. The PDP belongs to all of us, and we must take collective responsibility for its survival,” Saraki added .
Saraki also commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for welcoming the Appeal Court ruling and announcing plans for a fresh convention scheduled for March 29 and 30, 2026, in Abuja . He urged all party stakeholders to participate in the process to ensure a rancour-free outcome .
