ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Nigerian Senate has confirmed the appointment of Mr. Taiwo Oyedele as Minister of State for Finance following his nomination by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to replace Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite .
The confirmation came after the upper legislative chamber commenced the screening of the nominee on Wednesday, barely 24 hours after President Tinubu transmitted a letter to the Senate seeking Oyedele’s confirmation for appointment into the Federal Executive Council .
Oyedele, 50, is an economist, accountant and public policy expert who previously served as Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, where he led key initiatives to overhaul Nigeria’s tax system and improve fiscal governance . He hails from Ikaram in Akoko, Ondo State .
Before his appointment, Oyedele spent 22 years at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), joining in 2001 and rising to become Fiscal Policy Partner and Africa Tax Leader . He attended Yaba College of Technology, where he obtained a Higher National Diploma in accountancy and finance, and earned a BSc in applied accounting from Oxford Brookes University. He also completed executive education programmes at the London School of Economics, Yale University, and the Harvard Kennedy School .
The confirmation followed President Tinubu’s request contained in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Tuesday’s plenary, where the President cited Section 147(2) of the Nigerian Constitution as the basis for the nomination .
Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, whom Oyedele replaces, has been redeployed to the Ministry of Budget and National Planning as Minister of State, marking her third portfolio in the administration since 2023 .
In a separate development, the Senate also commenced the confirmation process for former Senator Magnus Abe as Chairman of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), alongside two non-executive commissioner nominees .
