ABUJA, NIGERIA – The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has dismissed concerns that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may face electoral disadvantages in states where it does not control the governorship ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking to journalists after the PDP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja, Wike argued that the presence or absence of a PDP governor in a state does not determine the party’s electoral fortunes. He insisted that the party’s structure, grassroots mobilization, and candidate appeal remain the critical factors for victory.
“It is not about who is governor. It is about who has the structure and who the people trust. We have won elections in states without PDP governors before, and we will do it again,” Wike stated.
The FCT Minister, a key figure in the party’s internal dynamics, also urged members to focus on unity and effective preparation rather than internal divisions. He called on stakeholders to prioritize the party’s collective interest ahead of individual ambitions.
His remarks come amid ongoing debates about the PDP’s preparedness for the next election cycle, with some party members expressing concerns over the party’s strength in states controlled by opposition governors.
The PDP has been working to resolve internal tensions and present a united front as it prepares for the 2027 polls, with the party’s national convention scheduled for later this month.
