A former presidential candidate and 2027 aspirant, Professor Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies, has called on Nigeria to follow the examples of Liberia and Namibia by electing a woman as president in the 2027 general elections.
In a powerful opinion piece, Adesanya-Davies argued that Nigeria cannot afford to lag behind other African nations that have already entrusted their highest offices to women. She cited Liberia’s Ellen Johnson Sirleaf—Africa’s first elected female president—and Namibia’s recent elevation of women into top leadership roles as proof that competence, not gender, should determine leadership.
“Nigerian women have consistently proven their capacity across all sectors—academia, business, governance, diplomacy, and grassroots mobilization,” she wrote. “Yet, despite their undeniable contributions, women remain grossly underrepresented in Nigeria’s highest political offices.”
The 2019 presidential candidate emphasized that the call for a woman president is not a sentimental appeal but a national imperative, noting that women leaders often prioritize education, healthcare, family welfare, and peacebuilding.
She urged political parties to create genuine pathways for female candidates and called on the electorate to embrace competence over convention.
“If Liberia could, if Namibia can, why not Nigeria?” she asked.
