Senate Orders Probe Into Safe School Fund After Kebbi Schoolgirls Abduction

ABUJA – The Nigerian Senate has mandated a comprehensive investigation into the management and utilization of the Safe School Fund following last week’s abduction of 25 schoolgirls from Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School in Kebbi State.

The resolution was passed during Tuesday’s plenary session, with lawmakers expressing grave concern over the security breach that exposed vulnerabilities in the program designed to protect educational institutions from terrorist attacks.

Senators unanimously condemned the attack that resulted in the kidnapping of the students and the tragic killing of the school principal, describing it as a systemic failure that demands immediate accountability.

The Upper House has directed its Committees on Education, Finance, and National Security to conduct a joint investigation into the disbursement and implementation of the Safe School Fund across states most vulnerable to security threats.

“This tragic incident in Kebbi raises serious questions about the effectiveness of the Safe School Initiative. We need to ascertain whether allocated funds have been properly utilized for their intended purpose of securing our schools,” stated Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

The Safe School Fund was established to strengthen security infrastructure in schools located in high-risk areas, particularly in northern Nigeria where educational institutions have frequently been targeted by terrorist groups.

The investigative committees have been given four weeks to complete their probe and report back to the Senate with findings and recommendations for corrective action.
