Senate Suspends Recess, Summons Emergency Plenary Over Security Crisis

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has cut short the Senate’s ongoing recess and summoned an emergency plenary session to address pressing national security challenges .

The emergency sitting is scheduled for Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja .

The decision by the Akpabio to suspend recess and summon emergency plenary follows growing concerns over the deteriorating security situation across the country, including recent abductions of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State .

A notice dated June 15, signed by the Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo, stated that the emergency session would enable lawmakers to consider “matters of urgent national importance,” particularly issues relating to national security and other critical concerns requiring immediate legislative attention .

The Senate had adjourned plenary on June 11 and was scheduled to resume on July 7 . The emergency sitting will temporarily interrupt the recess .

Akpabio had earlier directed the Senate leadership to conclude arrangements for a proposed national security summit, stressing that lawmakers must intensify efforts to strengthen the country’s security architecture amid rising violent crimes and kidnappings .
