The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, to explain the inclusion of a ₦1.3 billion allocation to what it described as an alleged “fictitious” presidential council in the 2026 budget.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that SERAP urged the leadership of the National Assembly to immediately clarify the purpose of the allocation and ensure transparency in the appropriation process.
According to the organisation, Nigerians deserve to know why public funds were earmarked for a council whose legal status and operational existence have been questioned. SERAP also called for accountability and urged lawmakers to review the budget item if the allegations are substantiated.
The rights group maintained that public institutions have a constitutional duty to ensure prudent management of public resources and prevent wasteful or questionable expenditures.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the latest demand adds to growing public scrutiny over the 2026 federal budget, with civil society organisations calling for greater transparency and accountability in government spending.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the Office of the Senate President nor the Office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives had publicly responded to SERAP’s request.
