Sheikh Gumi Calls for Halt to US Military Cooperation After Nigeria Airstrikes

Prominent Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has called on the Federal Government to immediately suspend all military cooperation with the United States following reported U.S. airstrikes in Sokoto State.

In a statement posted on his Facebook page on Friday, Gumi warned that American involvement could exacerbate Nigeria’s security challenges and undermine national sovereignty.

While acknowledging that Islam permits fighting terrorism, Gumi argued that such actions must be carried out by “clean hands,” questioning the moral authority of the U.S. due to its global military record.

He described Nigeria’s acceptance of foreign counterterrorism intervention as a mistake, warning that “terrorists do not truly fight terrorists” and that such operations often lead to civilian casualties and hidden agendas.

Gumi cautioned that allowing Nigeria to become a “theatre of war” could attract anti-U.S. forces into the country, further destabilizing it, and that framing interventions as protecting Christians risked polarizing the nation along religious lines.

He advocated for Nigeria to pursue military assistance from countries like China, Turkey, or Pakistan if needed, and emphasized that effective counterterrorism requires strong ground operations, which Nigeria can conduct independently if properly organized.
