The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has again threatened industrial action at Sokoto State-owned tertiary institutions over unresolved welfare issues and unpaid entitlements owed to lecturers, CDA News Nigeria reports.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that ASUU branches at Sokoto State University (SSU) and Shehu Shagari University of Education (SSUE) have repeatedly raised concerns that outstanding allowances, arrears and other entitlements remain unpaid despite several appeals to the state government.
Among the union’s key demands is the full implementation of the 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement, particularly the payment of peculiar and Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) owed to lecturers, some dating back to the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 academic sessions.
Reacting to the looming threat, the Sokoto State Ministry of Higher Education convened an urgent meeting with ASUU leadership at SSU and SSUE, led by the Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Isa Maishanu, and the Permanent Secretary, Ismaila Ibrahim Binji.
The meeting, according to a ministry statement, focused on resolving outstanding entitlements, particularly discrepancies within the Consolidated University Academic Structure (CONUASS) framework and professional allowances omitted from earlier implementations.
Both parties reportedly reaffirmed their commitment to sustained collaboration to preserve industrial harmony and protect academic activities in the affected institutions.
Despite the engagement, ASUU has maintained that further delay in addressing the entitlements could still push lecturers into an industrial showdown, a development that would disrupt academic calendars for students across the two institutions.
