ABUJA — The Presidency has announced that public submissions on the proposed National Policing Bill, which seeks to establish a legal framework for state police across Nigeria, will close at 5 pm on Thursday, August 13, 2026 .
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the Chief of Staff to the President and Chairman of the Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill, Femi Gbajabiamila, disclosed this on Wednesday. The consultation was designed to incorporate the experiences and professional expertise of Nigerians into the proposed legislation.
CDA News Nigeria reports that Gbajabiamila emphasized the need for contributions on critical issues such as protecting police services from political interference, establishing credible oversight mechanisms, and ensuring intelligence-sharing between federal and state forces. “For too long, the debate has been framed as a choice between effective local policing and protection from political abuse. Nigeria needs both,” he stated .
Gbajabiamila, a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, noted that the proposed framework must include strong safeguards to prevent governors from using state police against political opponents, protesters, journalists, or minority communities. He stressed that the law must protect citizens regardless of political affiliation and make political interference harder to conceal .
He explained that the constitutional amendment, which has been approved by both chambers of the National Assembly, must still secure approval from at least 24 state Houses of Assembly before it can proceed to the President for assent. Even after the amendment and the National Policing Bill become law, each state that chooses to establish its own police service will need its own enabling law and must meet national conditions before its officers can begin policing .
