President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced that the Federal Government will extend support to Nigerian states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) through the provision of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) powered buses, as part of ongoing efforts to reduce the cost of public transportation and ease the burden of fuel prices on ordinary Nigerians.
The President made the announcement as part of the administration’s broader Presidential CNG Initiative, which was launched to accelerate Nigeria’s transition from premium motor spirit to cleaner and more affordable compressed natural gas as the primary fuel for mass transit.
Tinubu noted that the CNG buses would significantly reduce transportation fares, providing direct economic relief to millions of Nigerians who depend on public transit daily for work, school, and business activities.
The initiative is also expected to reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported petroleum products, conserve foreign exchange, and create thousands of jobs across the CNG value chain including conversion centres, maintenance hubs, and fuelling stations nationwide.
State governments and the FCT Administration have been urged to partner with the Federal Government to ensure smooth deployment and effective management of the CNG bus fleets within their jurisdictions.
Energy analysts have described the initiative as a bold and timely intervention, though they stressed that the success of the programme depends on the rapid expansion of CNG fuelling infrastructure across the country.
CDA News Nigeria will continue to track the progress of this initiative.
