ABUJA, Nigeria — President Bola Tinubu has approved the expansion of the Nigerian Army from eight to 12 divisions and the recruitment of 28,000 additional personnel as part of efforts to strengthen the nation’s security architecture.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the approval was announced on Thursday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who said the decision reflects the administration’s commitment to enhancing the Armed Forces’ ability to address Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
According to the Presidency, the expansion forms part of broader investments in the military, including the acquisition of critical military platforms and equipment, improved troop welfare, operational readiness, and force modernisation.
“The approval underscores the President’s unwavering commitment to equipping the Armed Forces to address Nigeria’s evolving security challenges effectively and to strengthen national defence capabilities further,” the statement read.
Under the new structure, the Nigerian Army will operate 12 strategically positioned divisions across the country to improve operational effectiveness and response to security threats.
The Federal Government said the expansion is expected to boost national defence, improve military presence across Nigeria, and enhance the Armed Forces’ capacity to combat insurgency, banditry, terrorism, and other security challenges.
