Tinubu Holds Closed-Door Meeting with Rivers Governor Fubara Amid Defection Crisis

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu held a closed-door meeting on Monday with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, amid a severe political crisis in the oil-rich state.

Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State also attended a separate meeting shortly before the session with Fubara. The talks were entirely confidential, with no official agenda or outcomes disclosed to the public.

The meeting’s timing is highly significant, coming just days after 17 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly—loyal to Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike—defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This mass defection, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, has drastically reshaped the legislature, leaving only three PDP-aligned members who support Governor Fubara.

The defection has heightened political uncertainty regarding Fubara’s standing within the PDP and control over state governance, making the presidential meeting a critical point of focus for stabilizing the volatile political situation.
