ABUJA, NIGERIA – President Bola Tinubu has criticized opposition parties for allegedly twisting the provisions of the Electoral Act to suit their political interests, warning that such actions undermine the integrity of the nation’s democratic process.
Speaking at the All Progressives Congress (APC) national convention in Abuja on Saturday, the President called on political actors to respect the law and refrain from manipulating electoral rules for personal or partisan gain.
“Stop twisting the Electoral Act for politics. The law is clear, and it must be respected by all. We cannot build a strong democracy on a foundation of convenience,” Tinubu stated.
The President, who was re-elected as the party’s leader, urged opposition parties to focus on issue-based campaigns rather than seeking to exploit legal loopholes. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to free, fair, and credible elections in 2027.
Tinubu’s remarks come amid ongoing debates over electoral reforms and allegations of selective application of electoral laws by some parties. The opposition has yet to respond to his comments.
The APC national convention, which saw the return of Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda as National Chairman, was attended by party stalwarts and delegates from across the country.
