Medical Lab Scientists Reject New Health Reform Bills

ABUJA, NIGERIA – The Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN) has rejected the proposed health reform bills currently before the National Assembly, describing them as a threat to the profession and public healthcare delivery.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the association expressed opposition to provisions in the bills which they claim seek to centralize regulatory powers and undermine the statutory roles of professional bodies. The scientists warned that the legislation could lead to a decline in quality standards and endanger patient safety.

“These bills, if passed, will erode the gains made in medical laboratory practice and compromise the quality of diagnostic services in Nigeria,” the association said.

The AMLSN called on lawmakers to suspend further action on the bills and engage in broader consultations with stakeholders in the health sector.

The proposed legislation, which aims to overhaul the country’s health regulatory framework, has already drawn criticism from other health professional groups, including the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU).

The National Assembly has yet to schedule a public hearing on the bills. Lawmakers have assured stakeholders that their concerns will be taken into consideration as legislative processes continue.
