ABUJA, Nigeria – President Bola Tinubu has firmly rejected a recent designation by the United States that labeled Nigeria as a country of particular concern for religious freedom, stating the claim “does not reflect our reality.”
The rebuttal comes after former U.S. President Donald Trump alleged that Christianity faces an “existential threat” in Nigeria and called for an investigation. Trump claimed “thousands of Christians are being killed” by radical Islamists.
In a response shared on social media platform X, President Tinubu defended Nigeria’s constitutional principles. “Nigeria stands firmly as a democracy governed by constitutional guarantees of religious liberty,” Tinubu wrote.
He highlighted his administration’s ongoing engagement with both Christian and Muslim leaders and its efforts to address security challenges that affect citizens of all faiths. The president emphasized that religious freedom is a core part of Nigeria’s national identity.
“Our administration is committed to working with the United States government and the international community to deepen understanding and cooperation on protection of communities of all faiths,” Tinubu added, reaffirming Nigeria’s stance against religious persecution.
