ABUJA — President Bola Tinubu has issued a direct order to governors from his party to immediately comply with the Supreme Court’s judgment granting financial autonomy to local governments.
Speaking at the APC National Caucus meeting on Thursday night, the President insisted that councils “cannot function effectively without financial independence” and directed that allocations be paid directly into their accounts, not through state joint accounts.
“To me, the local government autonomy, as it is, must be effective. There is no autonomy without a funded mandate,” Tinubu declared. “We’ll give them their money directly. That’s the truth. That’ll comply with the Supreme Court order.”
The President also urged governors to prepare for the establishment of state police, which he called a “critical pillar” of his security agenda, claiming he had assured international partners that Nigeria would make it work.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who was present, pledged legislative backing for stricter anti-kidnapping laws—including the death penalty—while APC Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda announced a surge in defections to the party and plans for electronic membership registration.
The meeting was attended by top party leaders, governors, and former officials, setting the stage for today’s National Executive Committee gathering.
