PORT HARCOURT – A joyful return from a crossover service turned tragic in the early hours of New Year’s Day as a saloon car rammed into a stationary waste truck on the Obiri-Kwerre flyover in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, claiming three lives.
The victims, identified as Ahmed, his daughter Sheilla, and another individual named Aziz, were among a group returning from the New Year service when the accident occurred. It was gathered that the parked truck provided no warning signs, leading the driver of the saloon car to collide with it.
Eyewitness and family member, Engr. Ajiboye Amaho, who lost his brother in the crash, blamed the tragedy on the indiscriminate and unmarked parking of the waste collection vehicle.
“The truck was just stationed without any sign of caution, and my brother, Ahmed, rammed into it when they were coming back from the crossover night,” Amaho stated. He called on the government and waste management agencies to regulate such practices to prevent further loss of innocent lives.
While Ahmed reportedly died later in the hospital, Aziz and Sheilla were said to have died on the spot. Other occupants, including Ahmed’s son and sister, sustained serious injuries and are receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
The Rivers State Police Command, through its Public Relations Officer, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident.
“Yes, I can confirm the incident. Their vehicle rammed into a stationary truck. Our hearts go out to the victims. However, an investigation is ongoing to ascertain the details of what happened,” Iringe-Koko said.
The accident has reignited concerns over road safety and the menace of indiscriminate parking of heavy vehicles on major roads and flyovers in the state.
