Trump Orders Lake Ontario Renamed ‘Lake America’ Amid Trade Tensions with Canada

The U.S. President signed an executive order on Thursday to rename the Great Lake, a move Canada has already said it will not recognize.

President Donald Trump on Thursday signed an executive order to rename Lake Ontario, which straddles the border between the United States and Canada, as “Lake America,” effective immediately.

The move comes amid escalating trade tensions between the two nations. The signing follows Trump’s social media post on Tuesday stating the U.S. was giving “serious consideration” to the change, noting that “we don’t expect to be doing much business with Ontario any longer”. Trump told reporters the name change “was something I’ve been thinking about for a long time”.

Canadian officials have already stated they will not recognize the new name. The renaming echoes Trump’s January 2025 order to change the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America”.
