TUC Urges Government to Subsidise Dangote, Modular Refineries to Drive Down Fuel Costs for Nigerians

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has called on the Federal Government to extend targeted subsidies to the Dangote Refinery and modular refineries operating across the country, arguing that such a strategic intervention would significantly drive down the cost of petroleum products and provide much-needed economic relief to millions of suffering Nigerians.

The TUC, speaking through its national leadership, argued that rather than continuing with the controversial and financially draining blanket fuel subsidy regime of the past, the government should adopt a more focused and productive approach by directly supporting domestic refining capacity — a move the union believes would guarantee cheaper, more stable, and locally produced fuel for Nigerian consumers.

The Congress stressed that the Dangote Refinery, as Africa’s largest single-train refinery, alongside the growing network of modular refineries scattered across the country, represents Nigeria’s best and most realistic pathway to achieving energy self-sufficiency, price stability, and reduced dependence on costly fuel imports.

“Subsidising domestic refineries is smarter, more sustainable, and far more beneficial to Nigerian workers and families than importing refined fuel at outrageous global market prices,” a TUC official stated.

The union further warned that the current trajectory of high fuel prices is deepening poverty, fuelling inflation, and crippling the purchasing power of Nigerian workers — a situation it described as socially explosive and economically unsustainable if left unaddressed.

The TUC called on the Federal Government to urgently engage refinery operators, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), and relevant economic ministries to design and implement a transparent, accountable, and time-bound refinery subsidy framework that prioritises the welfare of ordinary Nigerians.
