UNICAL Professor Sentenced To 5-Year Jail Term For Sexual Harassment

ABUJA – The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced suspended University of Calabar Law Faculty Dean, Professor Cyril Ndifon, to five years imprisonment for sexually harassing his female students.

Justice James Omotosho delivered the judgment on Monday, convicting Ndifon on two counts of sexual harassment while discharging and acquitting his co-defendant, lawyer Sunny Anyanwu, who was accused of attempting to pervert the course of justice.

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) had prosecuted Ndifon for demanding explicit photographs from female students through WhatsApp messages while serving as Dean of the Faculty of Law.

Evidence presented in court revealed that the professor harassed a diploma student identified by the pseudonym ‘TJK’, asking her to send “pornographic, indecent and obscene photographs of herself.”

The court sentenced Ndifon to two years imprisonment on one count and five years on another, with both sentences to run concurrently.

The judgment represents a significant development in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to address sexual misconduct within educational institutions.
