A letter from the US Consulate in Lagos to Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police confirmed that an FBI records check found no criminal history for the then-Governor of Lagos State.
A United States consular letter dated February 4, 2003, cleared then-Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu of any criminal record in the country, stating that an FBI check found no evidence of arrests, warrants, or convictions against him . The communication was addressed to the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Tafa Balogun, following an inquiry by the Lagos State chapter of the Alliance for Democracy concerning allegations made against Governor Tinubu .
The letter, signed by the Legal Attaché at the US Consulate in Lagos, Michael H. Bonner, detailed the result of a records check conducted via the FBI’s National Crime Information Centre (NCIC) . It stated that the checks were “negative for any criminal arrest records, wants, or warrants for Bola Ahmed Tinubu” . The NCIC is a centralised system that maintains records of criminal arrests and convictions across the United States and its territories .
CDA News Nigeria reports that the inquiry came after the AD’s screening committee requested police assistance to verify the allegations against Governor Tinubu, to ensure adherence to the rule of law . The police later confirmed the FBI’s findings to the AD, noting the absence of any criminal record against Governor Tinubu .
