Voters Defy Restrictions as Anambra Governorship Election Gets Underway

AWKA– Voting is underway in Anambra State’s governorship election despite some residents and commercial vehicle operators defying police movement restrictions intended to ensure security during the polls.

The News Agency of Nigeria observed commercial vehicles operating freely in parts of Awka and from Ogidi Local Government Area to Nkpor junction, with commuters boarding without hindrance despite the ban on movement from midnight to 6:00 p.m.

Security personnel maintained a visible presence at major roads and junctions across the state capital as voters turned out to cast their ballots.

INEC officials experienced delays in some areas, with officials at Agwuoka polling unit 008 arriving at 8:40 a.m. and those at Aroma polling unit 022 setting up around the same time. However, at Amawbia 02, Polling Unit 3, officials and materials were ready by 8:19 a.m., awaiting the official 8:30 a.m. commencement.

INEC monitoring official Mary Fajoye confirmed that election materials had been dispatched from local government offices, though some polling officers initially faced challenges locating their registration areas.

Presiding Officer Mark Kalu at Polling Unit 3 appealed for decorum and informed voters that priority would be given to persons with disabilities, albinos, and the elderly.
