Workers Set October Strike Over Petrol Price Hike

…JNPSNC Issues Three-Day Warning Strike Notice as NLC Backs Demand for N500/Litre Fuel

CDA News Nigeria reports

Public servants under the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC) have reaffirmed their September 30, 2026 ultimatum to the Federal Government, threatening a three-day warning strike from Friday, October 2, over the rising cost of petrol and worsening economic hardship.

CDA News Nigeria gathered that the JNPSNC, comprising eight public sector unions, is demanding a reduction in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) to ₦500 per litre, an immediate wage award for workers, and the constitution of a tripartite committee to begin negotiations for a new national minimum wage expected in 2027.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has thrown its weight behind the public sector unions, warning that the action could snowball into a full-blown national strike if the government fails to act.

In a statement issued by the National Secretary of the JNPSNC and General Secretary of the Nigeria Civil Service Union, Olowoyo Gbenga, the council said the September 30 deadline remained sacrosanct. The unions noted that petrol currently sells between ₦1,450 and ₦2,000 per litre, and as high as ₦2,500 in some locations outside major communities and cities, describing the prices as unacceptable to Nigerian workers.

The council called on President Bola Tinubu to address the issues of fuel pump prices and the wage award during the Independence Day broadcast, warning that failure to do so would leave workers with no option but to commence the strike from October 2.

The JNPSNC comprises the Nigerian Civil Service Union, Medical and Health Workers Union, Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Employees, Nigeria Union of Public Service, Reportorial, Secretarial, Data Processors and Allied Workers, National Union of Printing, Publishing and Paper Products Workers, and National Union of Agriculture and Allied Employees.
