OSOGBO — The Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Osun State, Christopher Arapasopo, has declared that civil servants and pensioners must not be intimidated or harassed before or during Saturday’s governorship election .
Speaking at a joint congress of NLC and the Trade Union Congress at the Osun Government Secretariat entrance on Monday, Arapasopo warned political parties against attempting to suppress voters . “This election should not be war. We as workers and pensioners of Osun State have every right to vote for whosoever pleases us,” he stated .
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the labour leaders organised the congress to signal that any party attempting to intimidate workers would face resistance .
The NLC chairman also addressed controversy surrounding the N20,000 palliative paid to workers, clarifying that the funds were requested by labour, not a vote-buying scheme by Governor Ademola Adeleke . According to Arapasopo, organised labour wrote to the governor on April 8 requesting palliatives to cushion economic hardship, initially demanding N20,000 per worker but later agreeing to N10,000 following discussions over the state’s financial constraints .
He appealed to President Bola Tinubu to call the Osun APC to order and urged the police to remain neutral and protect citizens rather than take sides . “The Police should do their work. Their work is to protect citizens and not taking side,” he said .
The Independent National Electoral Commission has cleared 14 political parties to participate in the August 15 poll .
