A bill proposing a single six-year term for the President, state governors, and local government chairmen will be considered by the 11th Senate, a federal lawmaker has revealed.
Speaking with journalists on Tuesday in Abuja, the lawmaker, who pleaded anonymity, said the proposed legislation aims to reduce election-related tension, cut the cost of governance, and allow leaders to focus on long-term development without the distraction of re-election campaigns.
“The current four-year renewable term encourages endless politicking and wastes huge resources. A single six-year term will provide stability and save Nigeria billions of naira,” the lawmaker said.
The bill is expected to be sponsored by a cross-party coalition of senators when the 11th Senate is inaugurated in 2027. However, constitutional amendment would require the support of two-thirds of the National Assembly and ratification by at least 24 state houses of assembly.
Public reactions are already divided. Some civil society groups have welcomed the proposal, while others argue that it reduces democratic accountability.
The presidency has yet to comment on the proposal.
