…Ughulu Insists Movement Is Independent, Not an Appendage of Party
The Obi-Kwankwaso Movement, popularly known as the OK Movement, has vowed to retain its independent organisational structure and has rejected any attempt to merge its structures into the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 elections.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the movement’s Director-General, John Ughulu, made the position known on Wednesday while responding to comments by NDC National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, on the role of support groups in the party’s campaign.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that Dickson had argued that support groups should complement political parties rather than compete with them or establish parallel campaign structures. He also criticised the OK Movement’s decision to establish a 59-member Presidential Campaign Council for the NDC ticket.
Ughulu, however, said the OK Movement was an independent political organisation, not an appendage of the NDC. He said the movement would retain its national, state, local government, and ward structures.
“The OK Movement will not be collapsed, merged or subsumed into the NDC,” Ughulu said, maintaining that political cooperation did not amount to organisational subordination.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the disagreement followed the NDC’s earlier rejection of a 59-member Presidential Campaign Council announced by the OK Movement. The NDC National Chairman, Moses Cleopas, said the council was not authorised by the party and that only the party’s National Working Committee could approve such a structure.
The OK Movement said it would continue mobilising support for NDC presidential candidates Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso while maintaining its organisational independence.
The dispute highlights differing positions between the party and the movement over how campaign structures should be coordinated ahead of the 2027 elections. CDA News Nigeria reports that contested claims are attributed to the relevant political actors.
