Deputy Speaker Kalu Secures Key Endorsement, Woos Former Abia Lawmaker to APC

UMUAHIA, Abia State – The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has secured a significant political endorsement from a former Abia State legislator while actively working to bolster the ranks of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

During a separate engagement in Umuahia, Hon. Chukwudi Apugo, a former member of the Abia State House of Assembly, publicly commended Deputy Speaker Kalu for his legislative impact. Apugo specifically highlighted Kalu’s pivotal role in championing the South East Development Commission (SEDC) Bill, which led to the establishment of the commission—a landmark project aimed at addressing the infrastructural and developmental needs of the region.

“You have done well as a person… You have changed the narratives in Abia political landscape by galvanizing old and new politicians,” Apugo stated, pledging his unwavering support. “I want to assure you of my support anytime, any day. You are on the right track.”

In response, Rt. Hon. Kalu seized the moment to extend a formal invitation to the former lawmaker, urging him to join the APC. Framing it as a strategic move to honor Apugo’s political lineage and strengthen the party’s foundation, Kalu declared, “The train has started moving… Let us change the narrative. I’m inviting you… to join me in my party, APC.”

This direct recruitment effort is seen as a tactical move to expand the APC’s influence in Abia State by attracting established political figures. The dual outcome of the visit—securing a public commendation and initiating a high-profile membership drive—underscores a concerted strategy by the APC’s national leadership to consolidate its support base in the South-East ahead of the 2027 general elections.
