The three designated voting centres for today’s National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential and House of Representatives primary elections across the Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency are overflowing with delegates and party supporters — yet the exercise, scheduled to hold today, Friday, May 29, 2026, is yet to commence as at the time of filing this report.
Despite the delay, the atmosphere across all three centres remains calm and largely peaceful, with delegates displaying flex banners and flags bearing the images of their preferred candidates as they await the commencement of voting.
Our field correspondent reports that the three centres confirmed for the exercise are:
Ikwuano LGA — Ndoro Town Hall
Umuahia South LGA — Ahiaukwu Town Hall
Umuahia North LGA — Morphy’s Place, Old War Museum Road, Umuahia
The voting, which was originally slated to begin at 10:00am, had not commenced by the time this report was filed, leaving hundreds of registered NDC members waiting under the sun. Sources on ground attribute the delay to logistics, though no official statement has been issued at the local level.
The NDC confirmed this week that its primaries would hold via direct voting at the constituency level, following a decision to drop its earlier planned electronic voting system due to time constraints.
Among the aspirants eyeing the Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency ticket is Hon. Chief Hyginus Chichebem Ndukwe (Aku I of Ikwuano), who has been mobilising NDC delegates across the three LGAs ahead of today’s exercise.
