Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has firmly dismissed growing speculation about him replacing Vice President Kashim Shettima as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate ahead of the 2027 election.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Dogara stated, “I am not interested,” and urged the public and political actors to leave him out of such discussions. He emphasized that leadership choices should be based on principles of inclusion and national unity rather than pressure or fear.
Dogara stressed the importance of religious balance in governance, noting that conversations about a Christian running mate for 2027 are already underway within the All Progressives Congress (APC). However, he acknowledged that the final decision rests with President Tinubu, who is expected to secure the party’s ticket.
The former Speaker’s remarks come amid ongoing debates within the APC regarding the possibility of retaining a Muslim-Muslim ticket in the next presidential election.
