The Nigeria Political Scientists Association (NPSA) has criticized the federal government for what it describes as putting the “cart before the horse” in implementing the new tax law.
In a statement signed by its president, Prof. Hassan Saliu, the association warned that the law creates avenues for unaccountable governance, imposes multiple and inescapable taxes on citizens, and lacks transparency between the assented and gazetted versions.
NPSA argued that the government should first cut its own “obscene expenditure” and rejuvenate the economy before expanding the tax net.
It also expressed concern that taxes on petroleum and withdrawals will ultimately burden ordinary Nigerians, stifle economic growth, and discourage investment.
