LPDC Dismisses Petition Against Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu Over NYSC, Law School Allegations

ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) has dismissed a complaint filed against the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, over allegations relating to his participation in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme and his qualification as a legal practitioner .

The petition, filed by John Aikpokpo Martins Esq., alleged that Kalu made false declarations during his admission to the Nigerian Law School and participation in the NYSC programme .

However, after a thorough review of the petition and submissions made by parties involved, the LPDC found no merit in the allegations and consequently dismissed the complaint .

The dismissal by the LPDC, the statutory body responsible for disciplining legal practitioners in Nigeria, effectively clears the Deputy Speaker of any professional misconduct related to the matter .

This development follows a formal verification letter issued by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on May 23, 2023, which had earlier addressed and laid to rest the issues surrounding Kalu’s NYSC records, affirming that there was no discrepancy or wrongdoing .

The dismissal of the petition is seen as a major vindication for the Deputy Speaker, who has maintained his innocence throughout the period, describing the allegations as politically motivated and aimed at tarnishing his image .

Kalu, who represents Bende Federal Constituency of Abia State, has remained focused on his legislative duties and his role as Deputy Speaker, earning commendations for his contributions to parliamentary business and national development .

The All Progressives Congress (APC) and various support groups have welcomed the LPDC’s decision, describing it as confirmation that the allegations were baseless and orchestrated by political detractors .
