Minister of Festus Keyamo has urged the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to commend the Independent National Electoral Commission for its timely derecognition of the party’s disputed leaders.
Speaking on Thursday, Keyamo described the move as a legally appropriate response to ongoing leadership disputes within the party, emphasizing the importance of respecting judicial pronouncements and institutional decisions.
“The ADC should focus on resolving its internal issues rather than blaming the electoral body. INEC acted within its mandate by adhering to the court’s directives and ensuring compliance with the rule of law,” Keyamo said.
The call comes after INEC suspended recognition of factions led by David Mark and Nafiu Bala Gombe, following conflicting claims over the party’s leadership structure. The action has intensified debates within the party and among political observers, especially as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections.
Keyamo stressed that political actors must respect institutional frameworks and legal processes to maintain democratic integrity. He also urged opposition parties to prioritize internal reconciliation and compliance with statutory provisions to avoid unnecessary disruptions.
Political analysts note that INEC’s decision, while controversial in some circles, reinforces the need for parties to manage disputes internally and in accordance with Nigerian electoral law.
