Nigeria Drifting Toward One-Party Rule, David Mark Warns at Opposition Summit

The National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former Senate President, Senator David Mark, has raised the alarm that Nigeria is steadily drifting toward a one-party system warning that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is systematically working to dismantle multi-party democracy .

Speaking at the National Opposition Summit held at the Oyo State Government House in Ibadan on Saturday, April 24, 2026, Mark declared that the threat to Nigeria’s democratic plurality is “no longer a rumour, but a deliberate agenda” .

“In the last three years, this government has launched major attacks on the opposition parties, all in a bid to deny the people the right to choose. They want to foist a one-party state on Nigeria,” Mark asserted .

The ADC National Chairman accused the ruling party of weakening democratic institutions, compromising the independence of the electoral body, and systematically targeting opposition voices. He also questioned the credibility of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), claiming that public confidence in the commission has declined due to perceived bias .

“In this instance, Nigerians have lost confidence in the electoral body. INEC is no longer an impartial umpire,” Mark said, warning that the commission is about to preside over “the most distrusted election in Nigerian history” .

The summit, hosted by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, brought together key opposition figures including PDP National Chairman Taminu Turaki (SAN) and other stakeholders who called for a united front to challenge the APC in 2027 .
