Ethical Conduct, Integrity Key to Public Confidence in Judiciary — CJN

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has declared that ethical conduct and integrity are paramount to sustaining public confidence in the judiciary.

Speaking on Monday in Abuja at the 2026 Annual Conference of the National Association of Judicial Correspondents (NAJUC), the CJN said the judiciary cannot afford to compromise on ethical standards, as they form the bedrock of public trust and judicial independence.

However, in an unusually candid moment, Justice Kekere-Ekun added that she does not know the minds of her fellow justices regarding how they would decide sensitive election petitions. “I cannot tell you how my brother justices will decide,” she said, acknowledging the uncertainty that often surrounds judicial outcomes.

The CJN noted that maintaining public confidence requires not only sound judgments but also visible ethical conduct by judicial officers. She urged judges to be mindful of their public image and to avoid conduct that could erode trust in the judiciary.

The conference also discussed the role of the judiciary in deepening democracy and the importance of accurate reporting by judicial correspondents.

Observers have interpreted the CJN’s remarks as an indirect acknowledgment of growing public scrutiny of judicial decisions, particularly in politically charged election matters.
