Some youths suspected to be thugs on Monday launched an attack on the popular mobile phone market at Farm Centre in Kano metropolis, causing pandemonium among traders and customers .
The hoodlums stormed the market in broad daylight near Yoyo Plaza, a section known for phone trading. Wielding sharp weapons, they assaulted people and seized mobile phones and other valuables from traders, customers, and passersby .
An eyewitness told The Punch that the attackers reportedly came from a political gathering held near the market, though this claim has not been officially confirmed .
Police Intervene, Situation Stabilized
The quick intervention of armed policemen deployed to the market prevented the situation from degenerating into a full-blown crisis, as the attackers were dispersed immediately .
As of press time, there was no confirmed information on fatalities, but several people were reported to have sustained various degrees of injuries .
Efforts to contact the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Police Command, CSP Abdullahi Haruna, were unsuccessful as he did not respond to several phone calls. A text message sent to him had also not been replied to at the time of filing this report .
The attack is the latest in a series of security challenges affecting Kano’s commercial areas. The state had earlier deployed marshals to curb phone theft, but incidents of thuggery and snatching continue to plague major markets .
