Sanwo-Olu Endorses Deputy Hamzat as Preferred Successor for 2027 Lagos Governorship

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has formally endorsed his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, as his preferred successor for the 2027 governorship election .

The announcement was made on Monday at Lagos House, Marina, following a closed-door meeting between the governor, members of the state executive council, and Hamzat, who had earlier visited to formally declare his intention to contest . The meeting was attended by key political figures, including members of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), former Minister Musiliu Obanikoro, and former Senator Ganiyu Solomon, among others .

Addressing journalists after the meeting, Sanwo-Olu described Hamzat as a capable and well-prepared leader, citing his performance as deputy governor over the past seven years. He noted that the endorsement was unanimous among stakeholders present .

“We have just received the Deputy Governor, who came with a strong delegation of leaders across the state to formally inform us of his intention to contest. It was a unanimous position that he is fit and well-prepared for the job,” the governor said .

Sanwo-Olu added that Hamzat’s deep understanding of governance and his close working relationship with the administration have positioned him as a natural successor . The governor also expressed personal pride in the deputy governor’s decision to run, describing him as a “tested and trusted partner” .

“This is a deputy governor that is worth a governor from day one; a man that has been built for this job,” Sanwo-Olu stated . He further urged Lagosians to support Hamzat’s ambition, saying he has been “built for the job” and deserves the opportunity to lead the state .

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, had publicly declared support for Hamzat’s ambition earlier, describing the deputy governor as “our father and leader” . Other prominent figures endorsing Hamzat include the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Senator representing Lagos East, Tokunbo Abiru; and former Minister of Finance, Wale Edun .
