Senate Confirms Prof. Joash Amupitan as New INEC Chairman After Grueling Hearing

After a rigorous three-hour hearing, the Nigerian Senate has officially confirmed Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The confirmation process took place on Thursday in a “Committee of the Whole” session, where senators extensively grilled the nominee on a wide range of electoral issues.

Throughout the lengthy questioning, the erudite scholar and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) provided satisfactory answers to all inquiries posed by the lawmakers.

Following the screening, the Senate resumed its plenary session. The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, put the question of confirmation to a voice vote, which was met with an overwhelmingly resounding “aye.”

Announcing the result, Senator Akpabio stated that Professor Amupitan was approved without a single dissenting voice. He then charged the new INEC Chairman to carry out his duties with integrity, ensuring that “votes would count” in future elections.
