Nigerian political parties are scrambling frantically to beat the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) critical deadline for 2027 electoral activities, as the countdown to what many are already describing as Nigeria’s most consequential general election in decades enters a decisive and urgent phase.
The rush, which has engulfed virtually every major and emerging political party across the country, covers a broad range of mandatory electoral requirements including party registration updates, membership drives, ward congresses, state delegate elections, and the submission of key party documents required by INEC to qualify for participation in the 2027 polls.
INEC, which has repeatedly warned political parties to adhere strictly to its established timetable and schedule of activities, is understood to have set firm deadlines that leave little room for latecomers — with the commission signalling its readiness to enforce compliance without exception or compromise.
The ruling APC, the PDP, the Labour Party, the NDC, and scores of other registered political parties are all reported to be in various stages of frantic internal mobilisation, conducting primaries, resolving internal disputes, and fast-tracking the procurement and submission of nomination forms to meet INEC’s requirements.
The deadline pressure has also accelerated defection activities across the country, with politicians switching parties at a breathtaking pace in a bid to secure the most advantageous platform before INEC’s windows of opportunity firmly close.
Political observers warn that parties that fail to meet INEC’s deadlines risk disqualification from key electoral contests, potentially handing their rivals a significant and possibly insurmountable advantage in the race to the 2027 polls.
INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu has repeatedly urged all political stakeholders to treat the commission’s timetable with the utmost seriousness, stressing that the integrity, credibility, and smooth conduct of the 2027 elections depends on strict adherence to established processes and timelines.
With the clock ticking louder by the day, Nigeria’s political space has never been more electric, more unpredictable, or more consequential.
