Grief Across Nigeria — Police Confirm 17 Officers Killed in Midnight Terrorist Attack on Army Special Forces School in Yobe

Nigeria is in mourning as the Nigeria Police Force has officially confirmed the tragic loss of 17 officers in a devastating terrorist strike on a military training facility in the Northeast.

The incident occurred in the early hours of May 8, 2026, when terrorists launched a coordinated assault on the training facility at about 1:15 a.m. from multiple directions.

Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, confirmed the development, stating that several gallant personnel of the Nigerian Army also made the ultimate sacrifice while courageously repelling the attack.

The Commissioner of Police in Yobe State, CP Usman Kanfani Jibrin, visited the training institution on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, commiserating with the Commandant of the school, Brigadier General A.C. Enuagu, Army personnel, and surviving police officers. He praised their resilience and urged them to complete the programme in honour of their fallen colleagues.

Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, described the fallen officers as courageous and dedicated personnel who demonstrated exceptional patriotism and commitment to national security through their participation in advanced counter-terrorism training, assuring Nigerians that the Force, working closely with the Armed Forces and other security agencies, would sustain ongoing efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice.
