Several state governments have reportedly continued to exercise control over an estimated ₦10 trillion in Local Government (LG) allocations, despite the Supreme Court’s judgment affirming the financial autonomy of local governments.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the development has intensified concerns over the implementation of the apex court’s ruling, with reports indicating that many states are yet to fully comply with the directive granting local governments direct access to their statutory allocations.
The Supreme Court had ruled that local government funds should be paid directly to constitutionally recognized local government councils, a decision widely viewed as a significant step toward strengthening grassroots governance and accountability.
However, stakeholders have expressed concern that the continued control of council funds by some state governments could undermine the objectives of local government autonomy and affect service delivery at the grassroots.
CDA News Nigeria reports that legal experts, civil society organisations, and governance advocates have continued to call for the full implementation of the Supreme Court judgment, urging relevant authorities to ensure compliance in line with constitutional provisions.
The Federal Government is also expected to continue consultations with relevant stakeholders to facilitate the effective enforcement of the judgment.
