Meta Description: INEC confirms PDP, ADC, and Labour Party will not participate in February 21 Rivers State bye-elections over primary failures, nomination issues, and litigation.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Labour Party (LP) will not participate in the forthcoming bye-elections in two constituencies of the Rivers State House of Assembly scheduled for February 21 .

Resident Electoral Commissioner in Rivers State, Gabriel Yomere, disclosed at a media briefing in Port Harcourt on Thursday that five candidates are contesting in Khana State Constituency II, while seven candidates will vie for the seat in Ahoada East State Constituency II .

Participating political parties include AA, APC, APM, BP, NNPP, YPP, and ZLP .

According to the Commission, the PDP failed to conduct a primary and therefore could not produce a candidate for the poll. The ADC was excluded due to its inability to successfully upload its candidate’s details to the INEC nomination portal before the deadline .

The Labour Party is currently embroiled in litigation over its candidacy process, rendering it ineligible to field a candidate for the bye-elections .

Yomere assured that all Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines have been configured and are ready for deployment, with training and screening of election personnel ongoing .

To enhance credibility, all Supervisory Presiding Officers (SPOs) for the exercise are drawn from core INEC staff, given that the elections are being held in only two local government areas. Other ad hoc staff are being sourced from the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) .
