The Anambra State Police Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) has struck hard against cultism and criminal activity in the state capital, arresting 17 male suspects in a coordinated early morning raid on identified hideouts in Awka on Sunday, May 24, 2026.
The VCRU operatives, acting on credible intelligence, swooped on the suspects at their identified hideouts in Awka, arresting the 17 males allegedly linked to cult-related activities and other acts considered contrary to public morality. Items recovered from the suspects include dried leaves suspected to be Cannabis Sativa, containers of petroleum jelly, condoms, and other exhibits considered relevant to the ongoing investigation.
The suspects have been identified as Okeke Ugochukwu, 28; Okoro Christian, 17; Goodluck Michael, 25; Amuche Michael, 24; Ojukwu Divine, 26; Ikechukwu Chimeremeze, 20; Obinna Ike, 30; Nnamdi Desmond, 28; Odibendi, 20; Emmanuel Onyema, 26; Omalico Eric, 23; Duru Ifeanyi, 23; Diamond Zikora, 26; Charles Chukwuma, 28; Ikem Vincent, 20; Okeke Chibuzo, 23; and Izunna Okoye, 24. The arrests mark one of the VCRU’s first major operational successes since its recent inauguration by the Commissioner of Police, CP Danladi Isa, as part of a nationwide police reform drive ordered by IGP Tunji Disu to tackle violent crime across all states.
All 17 suspects are currently in police custody as investigations continue, with the command assuring residents of Awka and Anambra State of its unrelenting commitment to dismantling cult networks and restoring public safety.
