Jonathan Too Smart to Risk His Legacy for Another Presidency — Ex-Minister

Abuja — Former Minister of Culture, Tourism, and National Orientation, Edem Duke, has dismissed speculation linking ex-President Goodluck Jonathan to the 2027 presidential race, insisting the former leader is “too smart” to risk his legacy.

Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Wednesday, Duke described Jonathan’s tenure as one of the defining periods in Nigeria’s democratic history and argued that his status as a statesman should not be subjected to political calculations .

“The news of the possibility of distinguished President Goodluck Jonathan returning to active politics is one I take with trepidation,” Duke said.

He warned that individuals promoting the idea were attempting to use Jonathan’s reputation as a “pawn on the political dashboard,” calling the move a “political lottery” .

According to Duke, the former president has built a strong legacy across Africa and understands the implications of the discussions surrounding his name.

“I do know that what he stands to gain as a former president is far beyond risking another four years of aspiration,” he stated .

The remarks come amid claims by a PDP faction led by Tanimu Turaki that Jonathan has been cleared as its 2027 candidate — a claim Jonathan’s associates have repeatedly denied, insisting he has no intention of running ,
