Oyo Assembly Rejects Negotiation with Bandits, Demands Rescue

Ibadan – The Oyo State House of Assembly has firmly rejected suggestions that the state government should negotiate with the bandits responsible for the abduction of dozens of schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area .

On May 15, 2026, armed bandits attacked three schools in the Ahoro-Esiele, Yawota, and Alawusa communities, killing a teacher, a student, and a commercial motorcyclist while abducting about 39 pupils and seven teachers . One of the abducted teachers, Michael Oyedokun, has since been killed by the kidnappers .

The Assembly’s resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by the lawmaker representing Oriire State Constituency, Johnson Ogundele, during plenary on Wednesday after the Sallah recess .

Speaker Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin dismissed calls for negotiation, warning that such a move could embolden criminal elements and encourage further attacks .

“Negotiating with terrorists would send the wrong signal and potentially strengthen criminal networks,” Ogundoyin said .

While acknowledging the frustration of affected families, he urged continued support for security agencies in ongoing rescue efforts .

The Assembly called on the Federal Government to establish a permanent military base in Oriire LGA and mandated security audits of schools located near forests, including installation of perimeter fencing, solar-powered lights, and CCTV cameras.
